2010/02/17 - “What is this Goldman Sachs and why has it caused us so much grief?” is a question they must be asking in even the most remote of Greek villages, as they are throughout much of this economically troubled world.
At the heart of the worldwide banking meltdown are those mysterious unregulated derivatives that Goldman and JPMorgan led the way in selling. But Greece’s case did not involve the usual questionable mortgages packaged into derivatives with credit default swaps backing them up, but rather expected revenue on airport fees and other potential sources of the cashed-strapped government’s future income.
As The New York Times headlined it: “Wall St. Helped to Mask Debt Fueling Europe’s Crisis.” The story described the scam succinctly: “As in the American subprime crisis and the implosion of American International Group, financial derivatives played a role in the run-up of Greek debt. Instruments developed by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and a wide range of other banks enabled politicians to mask additional borrowing in Greece, Italy and possibly elsewhere. ... Critics say that such deals, because they are not recorded as loans, mislead investors and regulators about the depth of a country’s liabilities.”
As a result of such shenanigans back in 2001, Greece was allowed to join the European Union while running up enormous debt that went undetected. Greece’s neighbors will now be forced to bail it out, much as U.S. taxpayers have done for banks as a result of the scams Goldman and other financial houses pulled off in this country. The common denominator is that the packagers of the collateralized debt securities, be they based on subprime mortgages or government airport fees, have no real interest in the integrity of the packages, for they will balance them out with credit default swaps that pay off when the assets prove toxic. And they will make their lucrative commissions coming and going, no matter what goes wrong. Even after all the trouble in Greece, Goldman President Gary D. Cohn was back in that country last November with a new derivative scam based on potential revenue from Greece’s health care system.
But I’ve been troubled by reporting that focuses almost exclusively on European debts and deficits, conveying the impression that it’s all about government profligacy — and feeding into the narrative of our own deficit hawks, who want to slash spending even in the face of mass unemployment, and hold Greece up as an object lesson of what will happen if we don’t.
For the truth is that lack of fiscal discipline isn’t the whole, or even the main, source of Europe’s troubles — not even in Greece, whose government was indeed irresponsible (and hid its irresponsibility with creative accounting).
No, the real story behind the euromess lies not in the profligacy of politicians but in the arrogance of elites — specifically, the policy elites who pushed Europe into adopting a single currency well before the continent was ready for such an experiment.

Agreement has been reached in Europe on a “rescue” package for Greece. But it’s no cause for celebration. It’s the kind of “rescue” sensation one experiences after paying out what’s left in one’s wallet when confronted with a robber with a gun. The insanity of imposed budgetary constraints --harsh cuts, tax increases -- will be manifest to all soon enough. Economists and the EU bureaucrats who advocate a slavish adherence to arbitrary compliance numbers fail to comprehend the basis of government spending. In imposing these voluntary financial constraints on government activity, they deny essential government services and the opportunity for full employment to their citizenry.
Score another one, then, for the high priests of fiscal rectitude. Harsh cuts, tax increases — this is by no means a recovery policy. The capital markets have got their pound of flesh. But Greece is no more able to reduce its deficit under these circumstances than it is possible to get blood out of a stone. Politically, it means ceding control of EU macro policy to an external consortium dominated by France and Germany. Greece becomes a colony.

Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou has the European Central Bank over a barrel and doesn't even know it. If he had a handle on the situation, he'd thumb his nose at the ECB's austerity measures, and demand a no-strings-attached loan package to help his country get through the current rough patch. Instead, he's carrying on like a faint-hearted schoolboy. Papaconstantinou is concerned that Greece's dire economic situation will lead to default and capital flight. But his fears are overblown. The ECB is not going to let Greece default and trigger another Lehman Brothers-type meltdown. That won't happen. The Finance Minister needs pull himself together and realize that he's in the cat-bird seat.

There's no excuse for the Finance Minister not knowing what to do. The path has already been cleared by trailblazing investment banks in the US which have used the Too Big To Fail mantra to extort trillions of dollars of public funds. No one has imposed "austerity measures" at Goldman Sachs or Citigroup, nor will they. If Papaconstantinou plays hardball, he'll get the same treatment which will help his people dig out of the current slump. It just takes a bit of political moxie. Here's how economist Bill Mitchell sums it up on Billy Blog:
"Is the Greek government close to default? Answer: not even near it. The ECB will not allow that to happen. It would destabilize the Euromonetary system. The financial crisis has exposed the cracks in the arrangement. But as long as the citizens do not revolt as the real sector is squeezed the ECB will keep funding the Greek government. The alternative is to leave the EMU and restore currency sovereignty. Even though this would be a difficult transition back to the Drachma it would be a path worth taking in my assessment. I would also relieve all voluntary constraints which force debt-issuance and restore domestic demand and employment. But that will not be an option the Greek government takes. Their northern neighbours will make it very difficult for them to do that even if it means compromising the rules of the EMU. They know that if Greece leaves, the next cab on the ranks looks like being Portugal." (Bill Mitchell's Billy Blog)
Greece's problems are just the tip of the iceberg. Portugal is next in line. All of the so-called Club Med countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece) have serious debt-overhang problems that could lead to default if the right policies are not put in place. The magnitude of the crisis has exposed the vulnerability of the eurozone system. Critics have begun to question the feasibility of the EMU (European Monetary Union) where the needs of the individual members are so dramatically different. Perhaps a "one currency" system is not the best way to go, after all.

Despite popular misconception it was Gudrun Ensslin who was the female leader of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist gang also known as the Red Army Faction (RAF). Ensslin was the girlfriend of Andreas Baader and influenced the violent thuggish Baader with her left wing views in many ways she was the intellectual head of the RAF.
She was born in 1940 in Baden-Wurttemberg, one of the seven children of Pastor Helmut Ensslin. She grew up in a religious household and was well versed in the bible and the family often discussed social problems.
In 1958 Gudrun spent a year in an American high school and due to excellent exam results she received a Scholarship and studied English and German studies as well as philosophy. After study Ensslin tried to become a teacher. In 1965 Gudrun and her right wing boyfriend Bernward moved to West Berlin while she worked towards her PhD at the free university, here they were politically active taking part in protests against nuclear weapons and the presence of US military bases in Germany. Her relationship started to break down by 1967 after the birth of her son. Ensslin was becoming heavily involved in the left wing activist movement and surprisingly considering her background took part in a semi pornographic film ‘Das Abonnement’.
Following violent clashes over a visit by the Shah of Iran to Germany Gudrun claimed West Germany was a fascist state during a political meeting, saying “This Fascist state means to kill us all. Violence is the only answer to violence” Tensions were running high after a protester was shot and the police officer responsible was acquitted of his manslaughter. During this period she met and formed a relationship with Andreas Baader, leaving her partner Bernward Vesper and her young son at the start of 1968. At this point she made the decision to go from political activist to terrorist. In April 1968 following an arson attack on two large department stores in Frankfurt, four members of the gang including Ensslin and Baader were arrested and sentenced later the same year to three years in prison. They gained parole while awaiting an appeal hearing in June 1969 but fled once the appeal was rejected with Baader being re arrested in April 1970. Gudrun , Ulrike Meinhof and two other women helped free Baader in 1970, a rescue which resulted in a shooting and the press naming them the Baader-Meinhof gang. For the next two years Gudrun participated in various terrorist activities and became one of Germany’s most wanted until she was arrested in Hamburg in 1972. Her trial and those of the other captured members of the gang was the longest and most expensive in German history. While in Stammheim Prison RAF members tried various ways to free her including hijacking and kidnapping. On October 18 1977 she was found hanging in her cell while other members of the gang were found shot dead in their cells. During her time in prison she was instrumental in the other gang members ostracising Ulrike Meinhof who she thought was weak. Great suspicion surrounds her death along with the deaths of the other gang members on that October night with many claiming the gang was murdered by the German authorities. She is often forgotton by history with many wrongly assuming that Ulrike was the female gang leader. Gudrun Ensslin’s life was fictionalised in the 1981 film ‘Marianne and Juliane ‘known as “The German sisters” in the UK
